“All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers…. Each one owes infinitely more to the human race than to the particular country in which he was born.”—François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, French archbishop and author (1651 - 1715) in Dialogue des Morts, “Socrate et Alcibiade” (via mohandasgandhi)
Three of my friends (black) and I (white) are trying to find the swimming pool in a neighborhood to meet up with some other friends. We stop and ask a white couple pushing a stroller for directions.
Me: Excuse me, do you know where the swimming pool is? White couple: Yes, but it’s for neighborhood members only, so you can’t take *those* people. They don’t even know how to swim.
The kicker? All three of my friends have lifeguard certifications. Happened last summer.
I like Microaggressions, but I wish it included text about what happened next. Wouldn’t it be gratifying to see some examples of assholes being told they are assholes? Couldn’t it help all of us react better/smarter/faster when confronted with bullshit like this? The current format means that I imagine every story ending with the offended parties left standing in place, gaping like fish, while the offending parties walk away, blissfully unaware that they’ve said anything wrong.
